Bio-Acetone

Welcome to the Bioreaction Blog—where biochemistry meets sustainability, and every molecule tells a story of transformation. Today we explore the organic solutions of Bio-Acetone—a high-purity renewable platform molecule recovered from Zymobec Spectrum XT™ fermentation that replaces petroleum-derived acetone in coatings, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, and specialty chemical synthesis.

Bio-Acetone: A Renewable Platform Molecule

By Scott Hewitt, CEO, and Vincent James, Ph.D. (A.B.D.), CTO, Community BioRefinery

“A drop-in solvent that carries renewable carbon rather than fossil carbon changes the equation for formulators and regulators alike.”

Bio-acetone is recovered from the Zymobec Spectrum XT™ fermentation platform as a high-purity renewable molecule. It serves as a direct replacement for petroleum-derived acetone in coatings, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, and specialty chemical synthesis. Because it originates from residual sugars and organic wastes after food fractions have been recovered, its production does not compete with food supply and fits inside the zero-waste sequence.

The commercial advantage is dual. Formulators gain a bio-based solvent with familiar performance, supporting sustainability claims and regulatory preferences for renewable content. Simultaneously, the Community BioRefinery gains an additional independent revenue stream that improves overall plant returns. The same fermentation that yields bio-butanol and ethanol also supplies acetone, so capital and operating costs are shared across multiple products.

Demand for green solvents continues to rise under both regulatory pressure and corporate procurement policies. A renewable acetone produced as part of an integrated multi-product platform is positioned to meet that demand without requiring a dedicated single-product facility.

Looking ahead, as solvent markets shift toward bio-based alternatives, the ability to supply high-purity bio-acetone from residual carbon will remain a practical differentiator.
