Aquaculture & Hydroponics: Closing Loops into Additional Food Production

Nutrient-rich and fiber streams from the Community BioRefinery are directed into aquaculture and hydroponic support applications. These streams supply feed components, growing media, or nutrient solutions that enable additional local food production—fish, vegetables, berries—while closing nutrient and carbon loops. The result is an extra layer of food-system value and circular revenue that does not require new external inputs.

Because the primary high-value fractions (proteins, oils, starches) have already been recovered under mild conditions, the residual streams arrive with consistent composition and without the contaminants that can accompany untreated wastes. Process water is recycled, further reducing external demand. The integrated design therefore turns what would be disposal or low-value outlets into inputs for secondary food production.

Local and regional food-security goals, together with demand for circular aquaculture and controlled-environment agriculture, create a receptive market. A biorefinery that can supply these supports as part of its zero-waste portfolio strengthens both its own economics and the surrounding food system.

Looking ahead, the ability to close loops into aquaculture and hydroponics will remain a practical demonstration of full-molecule utilization.
