Closed-Loop Water Recovery: Zero Wastewater Discharge

Process water is recovered, polished by reverse osmosis and related purification steps, and returned to the Community BioRefinery as ultra-pure recycle. The design target is zero wastewater discharge. This closed loop reduces freshwater demand, eliminates discharge permitting and treatment costs, and enables continuous operation even in water-constrained regions.

Because the upstream process is mild and aqueous, the water stream is free of the aggressive chemicals that complicate recycle in conventional plants. Residual organics are directed into fermentation or other valorization pathways rather than remaining as contaminants. The result is a high-quality recycle stream that supports both process needs and the broader zero-waste objective.

Water scarcity and discharge regulations continue to tighten. A platform engineered for closed-loop recovery is positioned to operate where water-intensive single-product plants face constraints, while also lowering operating costs and environmental footprint.

Looking ahead, closed-loop water recovery will remain an essential enabler of continuous, community-sited biorefineries.
